A3 Australian themed Alphabet Charts
$10.00
The A3 Australian themed Alphabet Charts have been designed for children exploring the Alphabet in early years. The Qld Beginner Font makes it easier for children to recognise as the state-wide approved font so this is consistent at home and in the classroom.Available in a range of beautiful colours.Arrives at your door in high-quality colour and laminated for the many places you'll go (or the yoghurts you'll wipe off).
Activities to support the Alphabet Chart
A quick note on the alphabet... the alphabet is simply taught to allow children to identify letters which can then make up graphemes to form phonemes. When using the alphabet chart, we teach that there is a capital and lowercase form for each letter of the alphabet (26). A can say /a/ as in apple but it can also say /air/ as in ant.It is important that we teach that letters can make multiple sounds so that children don’t associate a letter to a given sound. Letters (graphemes) only make sounds (phonemes) when in a word.
The alphabet chart could be used as follows (not exhaustive):
Finding the matching Australian animals eg. “find me the rat... great work... what letter does rat start with?”. You can start to associate with phonological awareness as they develop to say “Well done for finding the rat. In this word, the r makes the /r/ sound like in rabbit etc.” Identify other animals that may start with the R. You could also ask your child what letters make up the word rat and identify how many letters are in the word.
Thinking of rhyming words, even if nonsense eg. “Can you think of a word that rhymes with yabby? This will be hard for some of the words on the alphabet chart but you can expand to other animals etc. Rhyme has to be explicitly taught. Rhyme refers to the ending of words that share the same ending sounds.
Buy a kids scrap book and grab some pens and start a developing dictionary where new words can be added to underneath each letter.
Letter hunt. “Find... p for python” or if you want to gradually release, you can say “Find me q... well done...what animal is this?” An extension could be to find the letter on its own and start identifying the sound the letter makes in the word.

Welcome to Get Lit(eracy) at Home
I’m Jess and I'm taking a break from full time classroom teaching to design phonics resources for families like yours. My passion for early literacy, especially teaching children to read, spell, and write, blossomed during 2020 when I faced the unique challenge of teaching phonics to a small group of 13-15-year-old boys. After years of research and hands-on experience, I’ve created Get Lit(eracy) at Home to empower families to take an active role in their children’s literacy journey. These resources are designed to be simple yet impactful, making it easy for you to support your child’s learning every day.Teachers do incredible work in the classroom, but it’s you, as a family, who can make the most significant difference. Embrace the opportunity to Get Lit at Home and see the positive impact you can have on your child’s literacy. With love and support,
